(A) Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport

(B) Establishing a Culture for Learning

When one of my students forgot their instrument in the fall of 2015, I asked her to write me a poem about why she liked band as an alternative assignment to passively participating in rehearsal. Part of this poem was written from a personal enjoyment of music, but part of the poem was also written as a tribute to the way that my cooperating teacher and I set up our classroom. She was hooked to music in some way because Mr. Vaughn and I had worked to establish a culture where music is important to every student. Because music was important to each individual, every student held a level of respect not only for music itself, but also for every musician at every level and us as educators.

The personal touch of this poem shows me that this student took pride in what she was learning as a musician in my class. She was the student who asked the deep, meaningful questions about music and the pieces we were studying, and her attitude was infectious to the rest of the class. The atmosphere of the middle school advanced band was much different than most of the other ensembles because this student engaged with the material on a personal level, and spread that joy of learning to her peers. It was very satisfying as an educator to have her as part of my class.
